Kids golf clubs

When looking for the perfect golf set for your children the most important aspect will be the size of the club.  Traditionally the clubs will be grouped in ages ranges such as 4-6, 6-8 etc, however when looking for clubs the most important part will be getting the right length of club to suit your childs height, despite their age. However most of the quality manufacturers will have their own guidelines to steer you through this process.

Next we will look at clubs individually to find out the things to check to make sure you buy the best golf equipment for a new starter at golf.

   Junior putters

Once your children get out on to the golf course the putter will be an essential part of their golf bag. Putting is where a new starter can quickly pick up skills and in my experience where children can progress the fastest.

Junior putters are not just shorter than adult putters they are actually scaled down in every way, with every aspect of the golf club undergoing a proportional reduction to make sure the club is perfect for beginners and junior golfers.

The head of the putter in junior putters are specifically weighted towards the heel and toe of the club to help the putts be a little more forgiving. Again the fell of the clubs are aimed towards beginners, this will help get a truer roll and help children understand the way a put should be played.

Again the size of the clubs are designed specifically to perfectly fit the junior golfers shape, there are often colour schemes associated with the size of junior putters. These being red for Ages 5-7 years, green for ages 8-10 years and blue for ages 11-14 years.  Again these are just guide lines and the ideal way to choose a club is for the child to get a feel for the club and choose the one that suits them, and remember the clubs wont last forever, typically a full set will only last a junior golfer around 2-3 so don’t break the bank.

  Junior Irons

The irons are the backbone of any golfers game so this is where it is best to begin and also the most important to get right.  If your little one can master the irons I’m sure they will continue to enjoy golf for many years to come.

The choice of clubs available to buy for junior golfers is an extensive one; this is good news for us consumers as it brings down the price and allows us to select the perfect full iron set.

Again with the irons the most important part will be to get the correct club length to ensure your junior playing the best golf they can.

The biggest and most prolific manufacturer of junior golf irons at the moment is the American company US Kids Golf however there many other manufactures including Jaxx, Meridian, Calloway and Nike.

  Junior Fairway woods

Fairway woods will be somewhat more advanced for your little ones. You will not need to look into fairway woods and hybrid clubs until your junior is a regular golfer and you are looking to drive down those scores. I wouldn’t recommend getting them into this type of club too quickly as the earlier clubs are the backbone of the game but with the use of fairway woods becoming more prevalent in the modern game it will be advantageous to get them using one in their early years.

The fairway wood is perfect to allow a golfer the flexibility to play a shorter tee-shot or just to avoid the traps out there at the longer distance then a longer second shot on the fairway. This is why the fairway wood is perfect for junior golfers. With 1 and 2 irons becoming almost obsolete a fairway wood is easier to hit and a more practical solution to those long irons.

Even though junior golfers won't be hitting the same distances as adults, it's good practice to start them using fairway woods as early as a beginner, so they can familiarise themselves with the physics of the swing and the way it differs from an iron. And there are several fairway woods available amongst the huge ranges of junior golf clubs.

  Junior Drivers

Golf drivers over the years have become more and more complex and more and more sophisticated.  With new drivers being released at very regular intervals and with the number of manufacturers producing excellent quality drivers this means a very good club can be purchased at a very reasonable price.

There are again many differences between adult drivers and junior drivers.  Obviously the length of the club is the main difference, but the clubs are also designed with the lower swing speed in mind.  This means the clubs are made of different materials making them lighter in weight, more flexible in the shaft and more forgiving than full sized clubs. As well as this the grips of the club are smaller to fit the smaller hand size.  The final significant difference is the loft of the club which is usually around 12 – 14 degrees a little higher loft than an adult driver.

In many of the modern junior drivers the weight of the club will be towards the back, this helps with the feel of the swing and again make for a more forgivable shot.
